America’s View on Illegal Immigration
By: Blake Durden
Illegal Immigration is a problem that has been steadily increasing over years. Many jobs have been taken over from foreign aliens. Since our economy is in such a downfall, we need every job offered for ourselves. The main problem that occurs with illegal immigration is that the illegal aliens are taking jobs from American citizens that really need the money. Another problem is that these aliens do not pay taxes on their paycheck, which in turn helps pull down the economy. The main occupations being taken up by theses illegal immigrants are construction, janitorial services, and maintenance services. The argument comes into play when economists argue that Americans would not do the jobs the illegal immigrants do even if there were no illegal immigrants. When looking deeper in the facts about illegal immigration, I noticed that many of the common views about it are false. The common view about illegal immigration is that they are taking over every low income or low skill based job. When in fact out of 465 civilian occupations, only four are majority illegal immigrant. In those four occupations, fifty-three percent are illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants do not solely control any occupation or even get close to it. Now even though illegal immigration is not taking over many jobs, it is on the path to. Illegal immigration is getting worse over the years, and many things have been done to try and restrict it. There has been an increase in border control, increase in punishment for being caught crossing the border. Another main reason illegal immigration occurs is because immigrants who enter the country legally, then fail follow up on their visa and stay in the country. This is happening more than a person trying to enter the illegally by crossing the border. The real issue is trying to follow up on the people with expired visas. That will drastically decrease the number of illegal immigrants. Our economy is in such a disastrous state that even small scale illegal immigration can inflict damage. If it were me in the position of leadership on illegal immigration I would stand more for the cause of controlling people with expired visas. Yes border patrol is a necessity, there has been so much money to prevent aliens from crossing over the border, and yet it is still a major problem. Anything that can be done that can help introduce jobs to real Americans should be implemented.
